Lookout for suspicious calls and texts

If you receive a suspicious message or phone call claiming to be from Carter Bank, do not click any links, call any numbers, or reply to any texts. Carter Bank will not contact you and ask for personal information, account numbers, or online and mobile banking login credentials.

Scam Alert: Beware of spoofed phone numbers

If something seems suspicious, hang up and contact your local branch for verification.

Recently, our Fraud Prevention team received several reports of scammers using a spoofed phone number from one of our Charlottesville branches to defraud our customers.

These scammers are impersonating calls from our Mill Creek branch, using the number 434-326-0068, and attempting to verify an outgoing wire transaction. They primarily target business customers and often request an amount of $63,000. Additionally, they may also use a phone number from Hillsville, Va., which is 276-805-0238.

If you receive one of these calls, do not provide any personal information over the phone, including account numbers, PINs, or passwords.

How to Report Fraud

Scammers often use a “shock factor” by sending alarming messages that try to create panic, making you react quickly instead of carefully. When you suspect fraud, pause and follow these steps:

Contact Carter Bank's Customer Contact Center at 833-275-2228 as soon as possible. Do not use phone numbers or links provided in suspicious emails, texts, or alerts.

However, don't delete, throw away, or get rid of any suspicious text messages, emails, or phone numbers as our Fraud Prevention Team will want to examine them.

If your online banking credentials have been compromised, immediately change your username and password.

Depending on the issue, you may be advised to close affected accounts, open new accounts, or disable services or payment methods.

Keep an eye on your bank and credit card statements for unauthorized or suspicious transactions regularly.
